Here's what a proper tile roof underlayment replacement actually looks like mid-process. The tiles come off first - every single one - stacked and organized so they can go right back on. On a job this size, that alone is a serious undertaking.

Once the deck is exposed, we install new underlayment and battens before anything else goes back on. We use TileSeal HT, which is a high-temp underlayment built specifically for the Arizona climate. It's not just paper - it's the layer doing the real work between your tile and your roof deck, keeping water out and heat from destroying the materials underneath over time.

The battens - those horizontal wood strips - aren't just structural. They create the airspace that lets your tile breathe and keeps them seated correctly once they're reinstalled. Skip that step or use the wrong material, and you've got a roof that looks fine but won't last.

A lot of homeowners don't realize the tile itself is rarely the problem. It's the underlayment underneath that breaks down after years of Arizona heat and monsoon cycles. By the time you're seeing leaks or interior damage, the underlayment has usually been failing quietly for a while. Getting ahead of it - before it reaches the decking - is always the smarter call.

This is what we mean when we say a solid roof starts with the right foundation. The tile is the face of the roof, but what's underneath is what actually protects your home.
